Saturday 7th January

Home against Tonbridge School (4-5 Loss)

A mild afternoon for St John's first fixture of the football calendar and this fixture didn't disappoint. The game was quite open in the first half, both sides taking the lead only to be pegged back by the other. Half time arrived and the home side, having the odd one in 5 goals, led 3-2 after a hat-trick from Shearer, the third a penalty awarded for handball by the away team.

Swiss and Shearer made the step up to the C team at half team and on came Brettell and Kelland. The second half started with a penalty conceded by St John's for a foul in the penalty area and despite a great save from the impressive Hayter in goal, the rebound was scored. The game had a flurry of goals in a short space of time and at 4-4 there was a tense last 10 minutes. Tonbridge missed a sitter and were called offside on two occasions but their dominance in final quarter of the game paid off and despite the desperate attempts of St John's. the boys in red took the spoils 5-4. A good game throughout. Credit in particular to Tonbridge's centre half who repeatedly thwarted St John's attacks and despite the score, a number of spectators commented on the performance of JJ Hayter in goal for St John's.
