St John's School, Leatherhead Girls 2nd XI vs St Mary's School Ascot
On: Saturday, 19 Nov 2016
Following last week's exceptional performance and fantastic win against Cranleigh, today's opposition promised to be another test as they faced St Mary's Ascot 1st XI. St Mary's put The Eagles under pressure from the start and defence struggled to clear their lines. St John's slowly worked their way into the game and after 10 minutes, were dominating possession and territory. Rene Spreeth had the ball in the goal from a short corner, but the ball failed to hit the backboard. Livvy Conboy made some excellent and timely runs into the D; an impressive save from the keeper prevented her from getting on the score sheet. As the game ensued, play became scrappy. With players being called up to the first team, hence resulting in unfamiliar positions, John's found it difficult to string passes together and it allowed St Mary's to have a few decent chances. Efficient defending and some strong saves from Charlotte Corbett kept the score at 0-0.
As the second half progressed, St Mary's pressed high and the St John's defence dropped deeper. This created space in the middle and resulted in some good counter-attacking opportunities. Conboy and Stock linked up well but were unsure how to deal with the keeper standing at the top of the D. Eventually (and thankfully), a breakthrough came. Liv Stock was played through and was one-on-one with the keeper. She pushed the ball past the keeper and the ball rolled nicely into the corner.
There were a few more scares for the defence, but the stood strong and the final score was 1-0. Outstanding performances came from Olivia Conboy, Zanna McMahon and Tash Davison. Charlotte Corbett also deserves much praise for some great goalkeeping and essential saves. Well done on another victory girls!
