St John's School, Leatherhead Junior A vs Hurstpierpoint College
On: Saturday, 07 Jan 2017
Venue: at Home
The Junior A hockey boys had much to live up to, following the outstanding season last year. With three L5th players playing for the 1XI, this was not going to be an easy task. However, the boys gelled well, playing together for the first time and sticking to their remit well. Some inevitable minor issues aside, the boys listened to instruction and this allowed all players to ensure the progress of the team, with possession largely in the hands of St John's.
However, finishing was not a strong point, with many missed opportunities for the likes of Peter Sinclair, Billy Bishop and Ollie Timpson. However, the midfield stayed strong and resolute, punishing mistakes and stealing the ball back regularly. In defence, the boys stayed strong, whilst the emergence of Ewan Armstrong as a leading light was pleasing; his reading of the game was a real asset to the team, as was the return from injury of Jack Harrison. Unfortunately, an injury to Luke Read cut short his game but it gave Ed Timpson an opportunity to represent the team, with him going on to score all three goals. However, the team performance as a whole was clearly a dominant one, with the penalty flick against us to take the score to 3-1 one of few negatives.
As ever, work to do in some areas, but having had just one proper training session, this was an excellent result for the team and bodes well for some promising games as the season progresses.
