St John's School, Leatherhead 2nd VII vs Sutton Valence School Girls-U18A
On: Saturday, 21 Jan 2017
This weekend's outing was not the finest hour for the Second VII against Sutton Valence's firsts. We got off to a shaky start in a very low scoring quarter that finished 3-3. Both teams failed to convert opportunities and it was left level with the match still to play for. St John's normally come out hard in the first quarter and so it was unusual for us not to have made a bigger impression.
We were shooting into the sun in the second quarter and, despite some good opportunities, we once again failed to build our score, whereas Sutton Valence pulled ahead to take the lead 12-5.
At half time, the team rallied. We were playing the opponent's game instead of our own and performing at a level well below our par. In the third quarter, we fought back with Hannah Potter and Rene Spreeth finding form and scoring almost all of our opportunities, battling against an inordinate number of penalty shots at the other end. The centre court players were bringing the ball down well with Anna Whitworth having an excellent game out of position at Centre. The scoreline going into the final quarter was 16-19 and we felt that with only 3 goals in it, the game was ours for the taking.
Alas, it was not to be. Our Shooters were given a contact barrage and some mistakes in the midcourt section led to some balls being given away. POM Lara Sibley and Charlotte Corbett made some strong interceptions in Defence, but it wasn't quite enough with the final score leaving Sutton Valence the 24-18 victors.
There was some disappointment and frustration and at our best victory should have been assured. However, some days it is not your day and we are now looking forward to rediscovering our form this Saturday.
