St John's School, Leatherhead Boys-U15A vs The Oratory School
On: Saturday, 11 Mar 2017
An away fixture at Oratory School at the end of a week in which the term was tired after its exertions against Harrow the weekend before, plus a mid-week fixture against St Paul's. The team started slowly and allowed Oratory to have decent possession, although the home side threatened little. St John's woke up as the game developed, with Bednall and Loy gaining more ball in the middle, Sellick dropping back to gain possession and Ralph running hard up front. Oratory had a couple of chances, but both were dealt with well by keeper Farnsworth and the defence of Eichelmann, Salter, Genco and Ballard largely looked comfortable. St John's had several opportunities but failed to convert and it appeared to be one of those afternoons until Sellick broke through, characteristically running at defenders and netting from close range. Loy doubled the score just before the interval as he found himself free on the edge of the box and shot into the corner beyond the keeper.
The second period followed a similar pattern as the home side gained possession but did little with it, other than some long-range shooting. St John's played some good football but appeared to want to walk the ball into the net rather than shoot when opportunities presented themselves. Thomas shot over the bar from close range and Mead connected from a corner but his shot went straight at the keeper. Ralph's endeavours finally paid off at the death when he once again ran in behind the defence to poke the ball beyond the keeper from close range.
