St John's School, Leatherhead Boys-U16A vs The Oratory School
On: Saturday, 11 Mar 2017
After the bus took a wrong turning on the way to the Oratory, our start against the team who had just one win looked like it was heading into similar trouble. A mix up at the back left us 1-0 down after just over a minute, and the Oratory striker shot only just wide shortly after. However, as St John's did on Thursday, a quick response from a set piece put the Eagles back in control. A dominant display saw much of the play in the Oratory half and on 18 minutes another Bound corner resulted in another Rowlands goal. This seemed to take the wind out of the Oratory sails and goals from Shannon, Fildes and two from Bayly saw the boys in green firmly in the ascendancy.
The second half was played almost entirely in Oratory territory, and even with a steady stream of goals John's maintained their discipline and composure. A little bit of greed at the close of the match was understandable with St John's producing the largest winning margin of the league season so far. With two usual starters missing the strength and importance of a squad was underlined.
On the bus home news came through that Tonbridge had beaten St Paul's meaning St John's 16A team are 2017 league champions with a game to spare!
