vs Haileybury

Won 5-2

This was a well fought for victory for the 5th XI against an attacking minded opposition from Herts. The visitors threatened often and the game could have easily ended 7-6 or 8-10 on another day, but when the chips were down, it was the eagles who found some extra mettle and rose above the Imperial Collegers.

It did not look like the game would end in as comfortable a scoreline, a couple of defensive blunders left the door at the back ajar and the sharp Haileybury forwards needed no second invitation, giving Holwell no chance - 0-2 to the visitors after only 8 minutes.

Enter Tom Lyons, a loan signing from the goalkeeping duties of the 3rd XI, his harrying of the visitors backline combined with an increasingly assured performance of the midfield combos of Hayter, Cappell, Rustom, Biggar, Tee, McGuinness, Stevenson and Lonsdale began to make inroads. Chaos at the back for the away team saw an o.g for St John's. 5 minutes later Lyons was in to level the scores and a second 3 mins later gave the Eagles the lead. 3-2 at half time, and despite the many, many substitutions a settled back 4 of Doyle, Smith, Al Saffar and Bradshaw were keeping the visitors at bay.

Moving to the front, Tee made an impact immediately in the second half, netting following some good build up from those in the midfield. As Haileybury pushed forward St John's menaced them on the counter and when Ruston made it 5-2 from one such attack the game was over as a contest.

A good win, played in the right spirit with some neat inter play. Well done to all those involved - Bring on Harrow!!
