St John's School, Leatherhead Boys-U16C vs Abingdon School
On: Saturday, 14 Jan 2017
The game kicked off with real enthusiasm and with long ball to mid field, fast play to the strikers and a rapid shot at goal in minute two by Ben Gosling. The celebration was short lived, an offside call put St Johns back to nill-all. It wasn't long before a similar play from the mid-field to George Myers saw a perfectly planted goal, 1-0. Dominic moved the ball quickly from the left to the right filed and a fast touch by Scott and we were 2-0 up, the team looked sharp and this match was to be theirs. Abingdon tried hard to push forward and we're constantly pushed back by a strong and well formed back line. Again, accurate play from Dominic to Luke and we were 3-0, Abingdon were struggling to get into the game. The same play followed with a fourth from Ben. With a few minuted to go the end of the second half the backs looked impenetrable, the whistle blew for half time. Lewis gave a pep-talk and we were ready to get going again. The game was very different in the second half, Abingdon re-organised, it was so obvious that St Johns game was being closed down and there was little response. Heavy and persistent tackling by Abingdon disrupted the play and they accurately planted two goals consecutively by St John's weak, confused and tired defence, they were running rings around us. No communication, static players and disarray plagued the second half. St. John's replied with a 5th goal and moments before the end a penalty put us one more ahead. The first half was exciting and the second was a little lack-lustre, there was much to take from this match in preparation for the next. My thanks to the parents that travelled so far to see the boys playing. Final score 6-2.
