St John's School, Leatherhead 5th XI vs Radley College
On: Saturday, 28 Jan 2017
A game of two halves, the mighty fifths impressed in their opening half against the strong Radley seniors. Un-phased by Radley’s opening goal, it was mere minutes before Ed Hayter went on to equalise by tapping past the Radley keeper. The game was on and the score remained equal for the duration of the half; chances for both teams came and went and John’s showcased some excellent plays both inside the box and on defensive duties. A last minute, fairly well deserved, penalty against John’s saw the score to 2-1 to Radley at half time. Unfortunately, fatigue quickly began to set in on the cold Radley fields and a lack of substitutes made life very hard for the St John’s XI. With Radley able to bring on a fresh 3-4 boys at a time, the fifths were stretched. A third goal made the boys step up the intensity, but too soon, with many reaching their physical limits. Mr Holwell’s exceptional keeping held off the assault for a time, but eventually the pace and energy of Radley’s fresh players made for a disappointing finish to what was otherwise an exciting game for St John’s a bombardment from Radley saw the final score come to 8-1 against. An admirable effort form all involved; more subs next time.
