St John's School, Leatherhead Boys-U18A vs Worth 7s
On: Sunday, 12 Mar 2017
The 1st VII played some good 7's at the Worth Tournament, which saw a range of teams involved.
In their first pool game St John's proved too good for an inexperienced Beechwood side running out winners 83-0, which included 13 tries. In their next game against Caterham St John's were cruising 15-0 up (courtesy of Toby McRae's second hat trick in 2 games). However a very poor second half saw Caterham up their game whilst St John's made too many unforced errors - resulting in a disappointing 15-20 loss. After some words of wisdom (!) St John's played much better in their next game against CLFS winning 24-5. The final pool game was against Bedford, who have won 3 of the 4 tournaments they had played in thus far. An exciting game ensued with St John's taking the lead via a fit again Will Sanders, but two tries for Bedford, despite some impressive tackling, allied to some narrow attack by St John's in the final couple of minutes saw Bedford win 12-7.
St John's still went through to the Cup competition on points difference. Facing Oratory Reading in the quarter final the 1st VII played some good rugby to win 24-12 (and ensure it was a successful weekend against Oratory after the footballers' feats the day before).
The semi final was against our respected rivals Brighton College. A physical and exciting game was played out. Despite St John's taking the lead (again via Will Sanders) a try either side of half time gave Brighton the edge which they held on to despite some end to end action, as they won 10-7. Brighton then went on to win the tournament (33-0 in the final), highlighting the small margins present between getting close and winning tournaments.
Two Cup semi finals in successive weeks is to be commended but the aim now is to find that consistency to record a famous win. With two of the biggest tournaments of the season ahead there is all to play for.
