St John's School, Leatherhead Boys-U16A vs 7s Tournament at Merchant Taylor School
On: Sunday, 05 Feb 2017
On Sunday 4th February the U16 7s squad began their sevens season at the Merchant Taylors School inaugural sevens competition. The squad were drawn in a group with UCS, Monmouth and Warwick with the first placed side progressing to the cup competition.
The squad started well recording victories against UCS (40-0) and Monmouth (38-0) resulted in the team knowing that a final match against Warwick would decide the group and determine who would progress to the cup competition. After a few close opening exchanges St John’s took control of the game and ran out as 31-7 winners securing top place in the group.
The semi final the team faced a dangerous St Paul’s side who went unbeaten in their group. It was a close affair in which no side was able to take control with the lead changing hands several times. The final score was a 19-19 draw, but given the rules stated that it is the team that scores the first points progresses, St John’s went through to the final.
The final saw the team face a tough Portsmouth Grammar School side who had beaten the hosts Merchant Taylors in their semi final. Again, it was a close match with neither side being able to take control and build a lead, but the Johns team were able sneak a narrow victory 21-19.
Overall a very positive start to the sevens season and hopefully the squad can build on this success for the remainder of the season.
