St John's 29, Reeds 5
After last year's emphatic victory against Reeds' U14C side the team were expecting to dominate but Reeds showed a lot of fight and this turned into an excellent contest. Playing in wet and greasy conditions, the first phase of the game was evenly balanced, with both sides tackling well but conceding knock-ons. The break-through came after ten minutes when Sam Davis showed terrific pace and agility on the wing to score in the corner, then followed up a few minutes later with an even better try, stepping three defenders en route to planting the ball between the posts. Playing at full back for the first time, Aron Tubman also unleashed his pace on frequent occasions when the ball went deep, and scored in the closing moments on the first half, putting St Johns19 points ahead at the break. The second half was even better than the first from both sides, and Reeds' dogged persistence rewarded them with an early try. As the players acclimatized to the wet conditions the handling improved, and St John's were able to put together some lovely phases of attacking play, rucking well and recycling fluently. Marcus Murphy and Ewan Armstrong both showed strength and determination to crash over the line on the end of these phases, bringing the final score to 29-5. Andrew Sargent was also cruelly denied a try in the corner by a matter of inches after a bold penetrating run down the wing.
This was an excellent team performance in which all the boys played well and supported each other closely. Man of the match this week goes to Aron Tubman for his agility and commitment in both attack and defence.
