St John's School, Leatherhead Boys-U16A vs Tonbridge School
On: Saturday, 07 Jan 2017
Venue: at Home
A strong start from both teams in what we knew would be a tough contest, saw most of the first ten minutes played in the middle of the park. A well directed header from Potter was athletically saved by the Tonbridge keeper, but gave the Eagles a lift. The next opportunity, only two minutes later, was well finished by Blake Fildes from the edge of the box, beating a stranded keeper. The rest of the half remained even with Bennett making an excellent save after one of a number of miscommunications in defence.
Tonbridge started the second half at an impressive pace, but our two touch play quickly cut them apart and two decent finishes from Rowlands gave the John’s boys what looked like an unassailable lead. This proved to be the case with nearly all the chances in the second half coming to the John’s team and on another day the score could perhaps have been even more emphatic. What was perhaps most commendable was the coolness of the John’s play, even after a number of very hard tackles which saw two of our players limping from the field.
A very impressive start to the campaign and with two weeks to prepare for Berkhamstead, who finished the 2016 season one place above us, there is plenty to encourage as we seek to better the result from last year.
