U14B vs Cranleigh
The second match of the season saw a rearranged and partially changed team that looked promising but was still just finding their feet. The boys were excited and ready to put into practice their new found tackling skills that had been practised throughout the week. Unfortunately early match nerves allowed Cranleigh to score a try straight away. Let’s hope this is not a tradition the B team will continue throughout the season. This try was then swiftly followed by losing the captain (Olly Timpson) to the A team due to injury. Even so the team kept their heads up and over the next twenty minutes St. John’s dominated the play. This culminated in our first try of the season scored by Braiden Hall. Excellent passes out by scrum half Ethan Macallister to Harry Lawes and Michael Anderson continually put pressure on Cranleigh’s defence and for a long time Cranleigh appeared on the back foot.
Just before half time there were multiple injuries in the A team match leading to many substitutions and the B team ultimately finished with three C team players in their lineup. Luke Horner-Long, Ben Potter and Matt O’Neil did an excellent job of fitting in with the team and continued to put pressure on Cranleigh. Over the second half, however, St. John’s lost their defensive organisation. This allowed Cranleigh to move up the pitch and ultimately score the final try of the match. The boys should be extremely proud of how they played today and the obvious improvements from last week were great to watch. A special mention goes to Harry Lawes as man of the match who consistently ran through Cranleigh’s defensive line and hopefully this can be developed into many tries over the season.
