St John's School, Leatherhead Boys-U14C vs Eltham College
On: Saturday, 03 Dec 2016
Venue: at Home
Saturday 3rd December
Home to Eltham College (31-10 Win)
On the larger 3rd XV pitch, a lack of numbers for the away side meant this fixture was played with 14 men-a-side. St John's utilised the extra space on a number of occasions allowing some nice passing moves and some good running. The first try of the game was following a Zubaidi penalty, the ball passed to Spurgeon, tackled and after a few quick rucks, Spurgeon again got the ball and touched down to score. The second try exploited this extra space mentioned, free flowing passing and quick recycling of the ball allowed Twist to run through and score. Eltham came back into the game and it opened up, both teams running and tackling well. Eltham managed a try but St John's quickly responded with a sequence of quick offloads and a good run from O'Neil to score, Zubaidi converting.
The second half was even for a long period, to-ing and fro-ing from end to end with some good play from both sides. St John's managed to score again with a very scrappy try, the ball was passed back into the Eltham goal area, dropped and Young pounced on it to score, Zubaidi converting. A few minutes later, a good chance was wasted by St John's but heads were kept high and moments after, Tweddle ran 3/4 of the length of the pitch to score between the posts, Zubaidi again converting. Eltham did manage a consolation try before the end of the game but St John's came out victorious 31-10.
A really good game for the neutral and from St John's perspective despite injuries in the A and B teams leaving a 12 v 12 game in the C's. The boys utilised a number of skills developed over the past weeks; spotting gaps at the breakdown and picking the ball from rucks, passing the ball out wide, strong rucking and team work; a number of spectators remarked on the good game which was testament to both sides in a clean, free-flowing match.
