U14B vs Eltham College
Playing on the senior fields was good experience for the U14s and provided the opportunity to utilise the pace of Michael Anderson and Omar Matthias. After two minutes both had made telling runs ending in a try by Michael, converted by Charlie Wolff. This was an excellent start and exactly was had been practised throughout the season in training. All players looked good in defence following on from this and the atmosphere was extremely hopeful. Unfortunately, Ben Grear who had done well to come and play considering illness had to come off. In this period of 15 versus 14 men Eltham managed to level the score. St John’s remained positive and continued to move the ball effectively from one winger to the other. Eventually this paid off right before half time and Omar managed to score the second try leaving the score 12-7 at half time.
At the beginning of the second half following the loss of three key players due to injuries Eltham managed to level the score again. The pressure was back on. The match seemed quite even with both sides playing well. With a tense atmosphere Michael made a promising run down the wing but was met by a solid knee to the chest. Once the match was reset we remained with 14 men against Eltham College's 15. This advantage and a good kick allowed Eltham to score the winning try. St. John’s fought valiantly until the end and almost scored twice through Sam Baker and Omar but were only just left disappointed. The whole team should be very proud of how they played. A special mention to Riley Prince who played very well when brought up from the C team, Harry Lawes who made some excellent tackles and almost scored before being taken up to the A team and Omar Matthias who was man of the match for his determination and grit throughout the entire game.
