St John's Leatherhead U14A 17

Eltham College U14A 12

It was a special day for the U14A eagles; the opportunity to play on the vast expanses of the 1st XV pitch was an enticing prospect! A beautiful December day weather wise saw the home side totally dominate the first half, though as at Haileybury two weeks before, all the possession and territory did not produce easy scores. Despite the 25 minutes being played almost exclusively in the Eltham 22, at half time it was only 7-0 to the home side thanks to Trevitt nipping down the blind-side to score adding the touch line conversion.

Calm heads were needed, keep playing, stop forcing that last pass or heading too close to touch was the message.

The second minute of the second half saw St John's go 12-0 up as Moss crashed over on the pick n go. Phases followed with Eltham nudging their way back in to the game, their bigger and more powerful runners finally allowed time and space to carry destructively. A crash over made it 12-5 and with their tails up a second score had an inevitability about it. So it came, under the posts making it 12 a piece with 10 minutes to go. Injuries to Moss and Stefanik saw Bullen and Lawes introduced to the fray. The boys in green dug very deep to repel further waves of Eltham attack before countering, a clearance from Eltham offered Goodman the chance to stretch his legs, he found super-sub Lawes who danced up the touchline for a match winning score.

This was a hard fought victory against our spirited visitors in the form of Eltham College. We look forward to our last game of the season, the visit of Epsom, in high spirits having won 3 of the last 4.
