U14B vs Hurstpierpoint
The day started with a crunching impact, albeit between bus and gate rather than two players. Following Busgate the rest of the day followed a more traditional pattern.
Hurst scored first but a great run from Harry Lawes led to the ball going wide to Omar Matthias who levelled up the scores for St John's. Unfortunately, an injury in the A team then meant that we played the rest of the game with 14 players against 15. Initially we struggled to cope with the overlaps that the opposition naturally had and Hurst scored two quick tries before half-time.
The second half was an epic with one early try to Hurst then a concerted period of pressure from St John's which was about to result in a try but for the referee having to stop the game for a head injury.
We defended heroically for the last ten minutes and the boys can be delighted with their second half performance against an extra man.
We need to work on matching numbers in defence and developing a drifting defence to avoid giving gaps to the opposition.
Man of the match was captain Wilf Morris for his excellent tackling and consistent rucking.
The first win of the season is definitely close and could open the floodgates.
