St John's School, Leatherhead Boys-U14B vs Brighton College
On: Saturday, 24 Sep 2016
Venue: at Home
The match started with a much better opening play from St. John’s than previously seen this season. Harry Lawes and Patrick O’Neill worked well together as the centres and the forwards started by rucking over very effectively at the beginning. This led to some optimistic cheering from all parents on the side-line and a great atmosphere. Unfortunately Brighton managed to score first but this was followed by a counter try from St John’s shortly after. Harry Lawes took a great, flat pass from Sam Sharp and then ran straight and hard through a terrified Brighton defence. The game then remained incredibly tight until just before half time when St. John’s conceded the second try.
Unfortunately the second half started which a much depleted B team due to multiple injuries in the A team. Although for the majority of the second half the match was still tight the players began to tire and several were playing mostly out of position. This weakened back line due to lack of experience in these positions meant that Brighton managed to run in three tries in the last five minutes. This was a soul destroying end to an otherwise exciting match between two evenly matched teams.
The boys should not be disheartened by the final score as there were some valuable experiences to be taken away. This week’s training will focus on tackling.
