St John's School, Leatherhead 2nd XV vs Eastbourne College
On: Saturday, 15 Oct 2016
Venue: at Home
This was probably the best match the 2nds have played this year against a much fancied side that haven’t lost a game all season. Playing with the wind in the first half St John’s dominated the proceedings with about 85% of the possession. Eastbourne only got into our half after 27 minutes of the game had been played. The boys played the game plan to a perfection and kept the ball for long periods and played some intelligent rugby. Very early in the game we converted a penalty and this was quickly followed with a try by Charlie Smith which was converted making it 10-0 to St John’s. This was the score at half time. In the second half the opposition played well and had now decided to throw everything into the breakdown. We adjusted accordingly and against the run of play and the wind made good ground into their 22. From a prolonged attack on their line, Little James White manage to force himself over for a try. This was converted making the score 17-0 to St John’s. With the clock ticking down the game ebbed and flowed between the teams with neither looking able to breakthrough at any particular time. It is ironic that their try came from a terrible kick into our in goal area and we fielded this without too much bother and Ollie Penfold dabbed the ball down and a micro second later an Eastbourne player jumped on it and screamed as if he had won the lottery. The Referee slightly unsighted (no joke intended) awarded the try. These things happen in rugby and to their credit the boys played on and kept their heads up.
The Final score 17-7 to St John’s.
