St John's School, Leatherhead Boys-U16A vs Wellington College
On: Saturday, 18 Mar 2017
Venue: at Home
With the league title already secured courtesy of other results last weekend the outcome of last Saturday’s fixture would have had no bearing on our final league position. However, both the coaches and the boys were set on winning the league and remaining unbeaten for the duration of the season. A couple of injuries meant that St John’s adopted a previously unused 3-4-3 system for entirety of the fixture.
Unlike last week, the boys were made to work hard for their victory against a well-organised Wellington College side. For no apparent reason St John’s appeared to struggle with their finishing in front of goal, something of a rarity for this season. At no point did the St John’s side panic, they remained quietly confident that the goals would materialise at some stage. The Wellington goalkeeper along with all three uprights continued to frustrate the boys in green deep into the second half. Eventually, St John’s were able to break the deadlock just minutes before the half time whistle.
Unfortunately, it was a similar story in the second half; despite creating numerous chances St John’s were unable to find the back of the net. The defenders certainly had their part to play, with the score at 1-0 for the majority of the second period they had to remain focused and alert to any Wellington counter attacks. St John’s were able to put the game to bed with a second goal in the dying moments of the game. Job done, the unbeaten record remained intact and the boys could then enjoy the league cup presentation with the Headmaster.
